RUI XU

The Chant of Breath

Rui Xu’s artistic process fuses fashion and fine art, drawing upon Chinese Calligraphy and philosophy to create distinctive designs. The performance is inspired by Rui’s delicate paper costumes. The dancers embody calligraphic characters and principles to create a language of movement.  Breath is invisible, yet it composes the sound to our words.  The dancers breathe.  The costumes breathe.  The Chinese characters and scripts are silent, yet give voice to thought; the pictograms representing rich narratives and abstract ideas. Translating these characters onto the bodies of the dancers is a poetic act which hopes to make visible the silent stories within these symbols.  Traces of the dancers’ movements shift in space, between languages, to create new interpretations.

Madaleine has collaborated with Rui Xu to create the choreography for her private view performances at the RCA and Saatchi Gallery.
